Information from FTC regarding online hotel reservations

I always warn my customers if they book on line this is what they might find!!!!

FTC Warns Hotels on Hidden Fees

“Hidden fees” in the airline industry has been a hot-button issue for several years. Now the federal government has broadened its inquiry into hidden fees in the hotel industry.

The Federal Trade Commission warned 22 hotels that they may be violating the law if they do not include mandatory fees and surcharges in their price quotes.

Unfair business practice
The FTC considers so-called “drip pricing” – a pricing technique in which firms advertise only part of a product’s price and reveal other charges as the customer goes through the buying process – a deceptive and unfair business practice.

A common complaint, the FTC said, concerns the mandatory “resort fee” charged by many hotels that cover the use of swimming pools, exercise rooms and other services regardless of whether they are used.

Those charges can add as much as $30 a night to a room’s cost, a sum that could affect a customer’s purchasing decision, the FTC said.

Resort fees excluded from quote
In its warning letter, the FTC said it reviewed a number of online hotel reservation sites and confirmed that some hotels exclude resort fees from the quoted reservation price, citing a “total price” or “estimated price” that includes only the room rate and applicable taxes.

“At some of these sites, the applicable resort fee is listed nearby, but separate from, the quoted price,” the letter said. “In others, the quoted price is accompanied by an asterisk that leads consumers to another location at the site – sometimes on the same page, sometimes not – where the applicable resort fee is disclosed, typically in fine print. A few sites fail to identify applicable resort fees anywhere, and instead inform consumers that other undefined fees may apply.

The FTC told Travel Market Report that the letters were sent to individual hotel properties, many of which were part of large chains.

“The FTC’s hope is that others in the travel industry such as online travel sites take note of our position on mandatory fees being included in total cost quotes,” the agency said.

GDS programs
The major GDS companies have “total pricing” or “transparent pricing” programs that are popular but voluntary among hotels.

A Sabre spokeswoman said that “if a hotel participates in Hotel Total Pricing, the price quote that the agent sees will include resort fees if there is one.” She said more than 90% of hotels in the Sabre GDS participate in the program.

So much to say, so little time

Well...Hi everyone. I am going to try to post everyday and encourage you to respond to my posts. If there is anything you would like to know, I can help.

I just came back from the newly renovated Sandals Royal Bahamian after being there for a week with Hedy. We were there for the Sandals Star Awards.

First two days...cloudy..no sun..no sun tan. Dinner at one of my favorites, Baccarat..always impeccible and very fine dining.
Day 2 ..dinner at gordon's on the pier (I must tell you this is only for Butler guests) but the lobster was amazing. The company was wonderful and the ocean breeze was great.
Hit the piano bar that night and I never sing or do anything like that but along with some of my dear travel agent friends I found my voice... to the tune of sweet caroline...

Of course this was Sandals Star awards time and Thursday there was a beach party on their private island Sandals Cay which requires us to take a boat. Did I tell you it was windy as hell and the waves were so bad they closed the island for their guests..But their travel agents...we are brave..we can brave the storm...
They put us on their dive boats..and after needing 3 people to help me on because we all know how clumsy I am..They started moving when a large wave decided to make its way on board..towels were given to everyone. It was an adventure.

The beach party was simply amazing...out of a magazine. Everything you could expect for a Bahamian Junkanoo party..A good time was had by all until raindrops were falling on my head.  Hedy and I headed out and back to the boat. Quite a few other people had the same idea..So we had a full boat and headed back to the mainland..Getting off of the boat was an experience to say the least when an even bigger wave came on board and we all slid to the back of the boat..I was wet head to toe.

Day two of star awards, Hedy and I went shopping in town taking our friend the number 10 bus for $1.25. Success for me..Found just what I was looking for...Shh..don't tell..

Dinner day two was with our fellow travel agents in the same region. Great food..even better friends..Steve and Debbie..I just love to death.

Finally sun..day 3 of the awards. Gotta get that last minute tan so I can look good in my gown.
The awards portion started and I sat..and I sat...and I sat...
Then I saw the screen(they had two screens plus the stage) and my name was on there.
For the LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD.
Shocked to say the least I made my way to the stage and took a group photo with the other winners along with Butch Stewart and Adam Stewart. A memorable night.

The next day...Sun and saying goodbye to all of my friends for another year.

You must go to this resort. The Balmoral Tower rooms are fabulous..we had a wonderful beachfront room...the building to the right beachfront. You can have it too..

Turkey Time

Greetings to my travel friends. My best wishes to you and yours for a very happy Thanksgiving.
Thankgiving is family time to me. I want to tell you a little about my family:

ABOUT US
We started this company 18 years ago in New Jersey and grew by leaps and bounds. We ultimately settled in florida after my kids were grown and we are proud to be a home based agency. Although the company is home based with the main office located in Hallandale Beach, Florida. we do, however, have agents at other locations in New Jersey and Pennsylvania as well.
During my years of selling travel I have found that I love working with people doing destination weddings and honeymoons as I see brides and grooms on the happiest days of their lives. The portion of my company that handles this is Honeymoon Caribbean.

If you simply book with a discount on line company or direct with the resorts, you are on your own. Not only can we provide expert advice on where to go, how to get there and how to take that dream destination wedding or honeymoon for the best value, but we also can help if anything goes wrong on your vacation.

In the past 18 years I have developed many great personal relationships with the management at each resort we deal with. Each agent, including myself, get to know each client on a personal level and strive to take those "extra steps" necessary to provide you with the best vacation package to suit your individual needs. We not only deal with destination weddings and honeymoons but family travel, group travel, etc.

Don't be afraid to use a travel agency. We are truly honest. You get what you expect. Don't be fooled by photo's. Since we have been to each resort we can help you personally.
Call our family of travel agents
We have been selling Sandals and Beaches resorts since 1995 and have been Certified Sandals and Beaches Specialists since the inception of the program in 1996. A Time to Travel has been certified by Sandals as a "Best of the Best" Sandals and Beaches Specialist for ten years progressing to preferred agency, a platinum agent and effective Dec 2011, the inagural class of Chairman's Royal Club. a row. We are among the top sellers in the world.

We have progressed to a point where our focus is selling honeymoon trips and destination weddings to the major resorts in the Caribbean and Mexico. We will meet your every need. We work with you from start to finish.
From Secrets to El Dorado to Couples and Sandals...
We sell it all to make your day a very special day.
Many years have passed since I started A Time to Travel. In these past years I personally have developed relationships with the management at each resort we sell. We get to know each and every one of our clients and we take the extra step to provide them with the very best vacation packages the Caribbean and A Time to Travel have to offer.

Our personal touch outweighs these other agencies who may have a lower price from time to time. We guarantee they wont remember your name or any details of your past vacations the way we will. That is the difference that separates us from other agencies. It is our business to make each and every client a "friend".
I love helping people arrange destination weddings.
And it has become my specialty.
I found out first hand how wonderful a destination wedding can be while planning my own wedding. I got married at Beaches Negril June 1, 2002. The people Beaches Negril went above and beyond my wildest dreams and expectations in the planning and executing my wedding. I got married on the beach as the sun was setting over the Caribbean Sea with my closest friends and family attending. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience.

As owners of A Time to Travel, we would like to convey our philosophy of doing business. If you make your client happy, then they will tell others about your services and come back year after year. Back from Mexico

Hi there.. Hope you like my blog in my new web site setting, Honeymooncaribbean.com.
It has taken us a long time to develop something that I felt was right for honeymoons and destination weddings.. a move that I felt I was leaning toward.

Well with that thought in mind, I must tell you about my recent trip to Mexico..My travel partner in crime, Hedy and I left Ft lauderdale to go to the Playacar Palace. Although I knew little about the resort, I was invited..so when invited you go.

The resort itself is small and not one of the grand hotels you see in Mexico. The pool is very nice, clean very well taken care of but again not one of the grand pools you see in the Riviera Maya. Yet we fell in love with this resort.

A quiet family resort...the rooms are spectacular and the view I had was simply amazing.
Two double beds in the room, a stocked fridge and alcohol galore..what more can you want except 24 hr room service which was just amazing.

The beach..the beach, the water wins my vote for a fabulous location in the Riviera Maya..Playa Del Carmen to be exact.
This resort is located right in the town of playa del carmen, just footsteps from the famous 5th avenue. Right outside our door was starbucks; shopping galore and Karen's, one of the best restaurants around.

This resort has my vote..we walked 5th avenue..we wined and dined and should we have decided to party, that was available too. Congo Bongo...On 10th avenue is prime for the party goers.

Another option is to go to Moon Palace or adjacent to the resort is the Ferry to Cozumel. Go visit Cozumel Palace...its easy and an option to you.

Carilise, I applaud you for having me choose this resort and I will be back for years to come.

Tomorrow...El Dorado ..Karisma GIVC awards  yayyyyyyyyy.....

One more time,..Why should you use travel agents?

I don't know how many times I tell people to use travel agents to book their trips but you know..unless something happens to the person, they continue to use online agencies.
Just yesterday an agent of mine was speaking to someone doing work on her home. He indicated that he was getting married in a month and had yet to book a honeymoon but was in fact looking online.
She said to him..you know I can do that for you. His immediate comment to her was "you mean you would look that up for me? You don't charge for your time?
You don't charge extra for your services?
Her answer to him was ....all of those things.
If you give me your "wish list" I will search and find the perfect resort including air for your honeymoon that matches your budget.
Looking on a web site can only give you photos..
Having been there will give you everything and we will take care of you from start to finish..

So people out there....Book thru us. Book thru travel agents. We are only there to help you.

When you travel in a storm

We who live in South Florida just had a fun weekend. We waited all we for the awful Isaac to come and churn us up and spit us out. Now hurricanes and nothing to laugh about I have been in a few. You need to be prepared for its arrival and hope for the best..BUT
WHAT DO YOU DO IF YOU ARE TRAVELING IN A HURRICANE...AND YOU HAVE BOOKED IT THRU AN ONLINE TRAVEL AGENT WHO ARE SPECIFICALLY ORDER TAKERS.
I WILL TELL YOU..YOU LOSE YOUR TRIP, OR YOU ARE FORCED TO PUT OUT MORE MONEY DURING THIS TRIP BECAUSE AS I KEEP SAYING, YOU ARE ONLY A NUMBER WHEN IT COMES TO THESE COMPANIES..

BOOK THRU A TIME TO TRAVEL/HONEYMOONCARIBBEAN....and this is what we would do for you..
Case in point:

I had a customer who seemed to be happy with me for years and then all of a sudden she was gone. I can't control who comes and goes but one Sunday during hurricane season..She called..I didnt answer the phone but she called and said she was stuck in Puerto Rico because she and her Friend had booked a trip to St Lucia and what was she to do because the St Lucia airport was closed....hmmm

My immediate thoughts were to jump on it and help her as I do everything, but I guess my sadistic bones were working that say...I never answered the phone..

So I am guessing she was stuck and stayed in Puerto Rica...lost her money for her resort in St Lucia and never knew the wiser.

Had she actually booked thru me..The answer for this would have been easy..
There resort she was going to has a sister resort in Grenada and it would have been easy for me to send them to Grenada..no muss no fuss..

Please to all my customers and potential customers....These online agencies are just order takers. They don't know the properties ...they don't know how to help in time of your need...They just don't know
you need someone with years of knowlege...and A Time to Travel is here for you.

My trip to Nassau, rain rain go away

Last month my two friends and I visited Sandals Royal Bahamian. Since we were 3 ladies and it is a couples only resort, we had two rooms. Picked up at the airport by a Rolls Royce. (I was never in a rolls- delete that from my bucket list).

We get to the resort and of course all of my friends who are in management are there for me..I just love them and the resort.

I get to my room...a one bedroom suite but you know the new rooms in the Balmoral block are much nicer..but I still opted for bigger....as we know bigger is better..They still need some renovation but as they say in Jamaica..soon come.

It rained...it rained and it rained. So we shopped and shopped and shopped some more. Downtown Nassau has become my very favorite place..oh the jewelry..and Columbian Emeralds..I like diamonds so don't be confused by the name.

There is a bus right outside of the resort...the #10..take it...totally safe and pay $1.25 each way...so easy to spend your money.

Back to the resort and we have an eat-a-thon going on. All of the restaurants are fabulous with the exception of Crystal. Not that the food isnt great..the service was slow and I believe they need a new wait staff.

Surprise surprise...waiting in my room for me were airline tickets to go to Exuma...a nearby island where there is a concierge/butler only resort called Sandals Emerald Bay. It has the most luxurious sand and it is simply amazing.
The resort has come a long way since I was there last and I am glad that Sandals resorts were kind enough to send me there.

Pure relaxation is the name of the game there. I would suggest a split stay for all of you who chose to go to the Bahamas. Spend 4 nts in Nassau...take a flight to Exuma and stay 3 nights at Sandals Emerald Bay....Just the best time to be had..

Got back to Nassau and more rain. We figured we would have to rearrange our schedule. Morning shop while the rain comes down..and 4pm beach or pool.
I must say, since the last time I was in Nassau the resort has improved tenfold.
More things to do...better food....and a much friendlier staff.

This is all due to the efforts of the wonderful management ...headed by Patrick Drake...he is amazing.

With love,

Sue

Sandals Whitehouse

This resort is located on the south coast of Jamaica. I  just came back from the very first Chairman's Royal Club Retreat. The resort has been redone and it is simply fabulous...from chocolate at the chocolate buffet to the chocolate martinis and the incredible martini bar, This resort is pure paradise.
Although it does take quite some time to go across the mountains, the gentleman who handles the roads for Jamaica promised that the holes in the road would be paved before the start of season. Which is December...
While there, slip out and go on an Island Routes catamaran cruise to the Pelican Bar...a place you will never forget.  Take a tour of the appleton rum factory or jump in the black river with one of the local crocs. Don't worry..they don't bite much>>
The highlight of our trip was YS falls...I watched my friends zipline while I stuck my feet in the mineral pool and dined on a catered lunch from the resort.
Honeymooners...future destination wedding brides...call me..book this resort..it is simply fabulous. The food, the staff the grounds, the rooms and the overall ambience is splendid......

love to all

Travel professionals are coming back

Customers who left their travel agents in favor of budget websites such as Travelocity or Kayak are coming back."Travelers want to have the people they can call and say, 'I'm at the hotel, my room is not good, what do I do?' They want to have a person who help them out."

And it's no wonder. Flying has become more complicated, hotels more competitive, and the best deals and perks increasingly harder to find.
Ask a travel agent..they will get the best deals for you!!!
NO FEES attached.
Have a trip in mind? No matter your tastes, there's a travel agent who caters to them.

According to the American Society of Travel Agents, travel agents still book 85% of all cruises, 70% of all tours and packages, 50% of all airline tickets, 30% of all hotels and 25% of all car rentals. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates there are 63,500 travel agents in the U.S., many of whom specialize in niche areas of travel.
Many believed that travel portals would wipe out travel agents. Yet that hasn't happened: Agents booked $95 billion in travel sales in 2011 -- approximately one-third of the overall $284 billion U.S. travel industry.
Most of those bookings were for corporate clients; agencies specializing in business travel recovered more quickly from the recession than those focusing on leisure travel.

But leisure travel is also making a comeback, and individuals and families are seeking the same level of service as their corporate counterparts.

Well...another month goes by and I bet you forgot about me. Well here I am back stronger and better and here to blog as much as I can.
I traveled last week to NYC's Grand Central Station for Sandals Wedding Unpackaged. Gordon "Butch" Stewart, chairman of Sandals Resorts unveiled how Sandals is revolutionizing the destination wedding experience.
I had the priviledge of meeting Randy Fenoli, of Say Yes to the Dress as he hosted this event.

Your Wedding, Your Way. No Problem, Man!

You can now book any type of wedding using any color scheme. You are not limited as you were before. Brides ...take advantage of this innovation in the wedding industry.

Airline prices

Has anyone stopped and actually taken a look at airline prices.
First..airlines are declaring bankrupcy and merging left and right.
They they are eliminating entire travel routes.
They are not accommodating the passengers left behind scrambling for new flights.
So..Mexico wants everyone to come to see the new Mexico..but how do we get there?
There should be a general strike by passengers...tell the airlines that they will not stand for $700 prices to the Caribbean and mexico.
This makes a problem for everyone..
Join me..Customers call us and say...why is it so expensive...its the airlines..I didn't do it.. I don't want to do it..

The RETURN of the travel agent

"THESE ARE NOT MY WORDS...BUT HOW TRUE THIS IS:

Last year, a good friend took an international trip with a two-stop flight itinerary. Afterwards, he reflected on how beat up he felt when it was over: "Adding that third airport into the mix seemed to add a ton of extra travel this year; it was rough."

I asked how he booked the flights. He said that he'd used one of the big travel booking sites, and that the itinerary he purchased was the best combination of duration, flight times and price he could find. My response: "Next time, call my travel agent first. You'll feel a lot better when it's all over."

The following year, he did just that, and the agent came up with options that he could never have found himself using a single booking site -- specifically, a short and affordable Southwest flight that put him in an airport with countless options for direct flights to his final destination. What would have been another expensive, six-flight endurance test was replaced by a far less demanding trip.

I use my travel agent on about 50 percent of all my trips, so when CNN marvels that travel agents may be making a comeback, I have to agree.

the Return of the Travel Agent

Why now? Personally, I've found that the likelihood of using a travel agent increases in direct proportion to the abundance and complexity of travel options you can find on the Internet. Many travelers are discovering the following:

In offering more options and amenities, online travel sites have actually made it more confusing to figure out what they are selling, not less so.

the explosion of restrictions and fees -- many of which are not obvious to the casual travel buyer -- further muddies understanding of the bottom line on any itinerary.

The absence of a number of popular airlines from major booking engines -- the juggernaut Southwest being the most glaring -- eliminates what could well turn out to be a specific traveler's absolute best itinerary.
The big online travel sites got too smart for their own good; by tidying up and repackaging all the data each according to their own assumptions about travel purchasing, they show us what they think we want to see, but not always what we really want to see. That is, by becoming "online travel agents," rather than mere booking sites, they end up in competition with real travel agents, who can usually do the work better than computers can.

Despite being "smarter" and more comprehensive than ever, the typical travel booking experience has way too many dead ends. Whether it be the inability to get seats together, or disappearing fare sales, or the inability to lock in a fare for a short time, booking online is like being trapped inside a bad video game with countless trapdoors and false exits.

Poll: Do You Use a Travel Agent?

And my number one reason to use a travel agent: the reduction in flight capacity by the airlines has resulted in significantly more full flights on the routes I fly. At the same time, the booking sites have gotten only marginally better at offering seat choices and at seating companions together. Just try to book your family on a multi-flight trip and you'll see what I mean. Travel agents can hack their way through all this stuff.
It has gotten to the point that many travelers truly dread the moment they have to sit down at the computer to research travel. Seems like a good time to call in a pro, no?

If this describes you, or even just your next trip, here are some tips and guidelines for choosing, communicating with and evaluating a travel agent. For more info, including how to find an agent, when to use a professional and when to do it yourself, and some potential conflicts of interest to consider, see How to Find the Right Travel Agent.

9 Tips for Insanely Busy Travelers

Is the travel agent open to suggestions from you, the customer? For example, if you go out and find a decent fare and flight combination, but for whatever reason want some of the services a travel agent can provide, does he check into the flight you suggested or simply ignore your input?
Is there a 24-hour solution line you can call if you get in a jam? For example, say you're flying on a Sunday night red-eye from west to east, and your flight is delayed or canceled. Is there someone you can call at 10:30 p.m. to try to get you on the best next flight, or at the very least into a convenient and affordable hotel?
We are available to you.

We will come up with something better and more affordable than you ever could have, fulfilling our guidelines in every respect.

WE DO NOT CHARGE EXTRA

So many places I have been...so many more to go

Hi there friends...I haven't written to you in such a long time. I will start with the most recent trip. I just came back from a trip to Paradisus Esmeralda/La Perla in Riviera Maya section of Cancun. Close to Playa del Carmen..these resorts are connected by a walkway..one side anyone the other side adults only. Very interested way of staying at one and using restaurants of both. The walkway is where all of the restaurants lie. FABULOUS food...Amazing pools..Love the beach...and Paella at lunch. This was an eat-a-thon.
Now let me tell you about their mexican restaurant Mole....Holy Moly....amazing wonderful and all that..
This is a great place to have a destination wedding even with kids. Close to town and shopping..and the eco parks are a must to see.
We went to XELHA....about 20 minutes south of playa del Carmen. The newest one is XPLOR...north of playa del carmen with about 20 zip lines and an underground grotto to snorkel in.
$79 per person is cheap for a fun day away from the resort.
OK...Now...for the real deal.....
CANCUN IS SAFE. Don't let anything anyone says. It is safe.. You can take the bus..You can walk..you can shop. you can do anything. IT IS SAFE.
We went from Riviera Maya to Cancun a few times... safety was not an issue.
One night dinner at the adult south beach style ME resort, dining in the brazilian restaurant...Meat , meat and more meat..
The next night on the golf course at Gran Melia.
Just a fabulous trip and I encourage you to travel to Melia resorts all  over the world.
And don't  forget to use a travel agent. We are knowledgeable. We don't take your money. We get you the best prices. We know what's the best vacation for you.

We are not just order takers.

A Month has gone by...imagine that

It's been a while. My son, Mike got married Feb 18 to Alessandra in a beautiful beachfront evening wedding. Congrats to them both.
They went to Thailand ...seems to be one of the new destination for honeymoons. According to them, it was great, but it was a one time deal.
And then it comes to me. 3 weeks ago I went to Jamaica to take a mini time out and see some resorts I have not seen in a while..
First..The Jewel..formerly Sandals Dunns River. A simply fabulous resort with food and drink to die for. It looks pretty much like the previous resort. The hotel mgr is a friend from long ago so my dearest customers be sure and give The Jewel a shot.
Moving on..I got to see the newly redone Couples Tower Isle. A very contemporary resort, it was a nice resort but didnt seem overly friendly. Maybe that was my take on it as it was raining while I was there...Food pretty good though..
Last stop was Sandals Royal Caribbean...Home finally. This resort is my home away from home. Just wait til they start building over the water bungalows. Then Jamaica watch out....you will suddenly be mistaken for the South Pacific....Yah mon style..

Til next time..

Sue

it's been a while

It's been a long while since my last post. But I am back and ready to tell you everything you need to know about travel.
I will tell you a story. I had a call from a past customer telling me that the upcoming trip they had booked was a destination wedding and the travel agent the bride had chosen had held no rooms for the guests. In my mind, that is unheard of..but without knowing who the agent was, I made phone calls to find out if any rooms were being held by this agent. The answer was no. The mother of the bride, the maid of honor and many guest were not going to be able to go to the resort. The resort was sold out. The agent they had used was inept.
Did I mention that this was a Sandals resort and when I checked there were absolutely no rooms available. So I did what I do best..I work for the customer..my customers who chose the wrong travel agent for their special day.
I was not going to let them pay for it by having this wedding turn into a disaster.
I was able to find 5 rooms for these customers and they considered me their savior. I am no savior; I am just a knowledeable travel professional who knows what I am doing.
Be careful when planning a very special destination event. Make sure the travel agent knows what she is doing. Make sure you get everything confirmed ..do not take the agent's word for it, or you do can have a disaster in the making.
Hopefully the upcoming wedding will be perfect...
Congratulations to the bride and groom
